What is Maxillofacial Negligence?
Claims related to maxillofacial and oral surgery can result following treatment of a range of medical issues impacting various parts of the skull including the jaw, face, mouth, tongue, lips, palate, orbital areas (eye sockets), as well as the neck and ears.
Examples of Maxillofacial Procedures include (but are not limited to)
- Facial reconstruction
- Surgery to jaw and temporomandibular joints
- Cyst/Tumour removal from the jaw
- Cleft-lip surgery
- Cancer treatment, particularly removal of tumours in the head, neck, face, etc
- Management of cranio-facial fracture or soft tissue injury
Given that maxillofacial surgery often impacts an individual’s appearance and, at times, their ability to eat or speak, adverse outcomes from such procedures can have profoundly devastating effects.
While surgeons do their best to ensure these adverse outcomes do not happen, when they do it may well be down to negligence, often negligent performance of the operation itself.
